In addition to her work as a creator, Ms. Hopkins also works as a music therapist, performer, voice over artist, musician, and composer for hire.
Cynthia Hopkins, MA, MT-BC, is a board certified music therapist, having received her Masters in Music Therapy and Counseling from Drexel University in 2021. As a music therapist in training, she has worked with hospice patients and their families, children with social cognitive deficits, bereaved clients, and adults struggling with behavioral health challenges. She loves using the expressive arts to help folks thrive.
Cynthia has been acting in plays and musicals since she was 12. She has played a wild array of roles during her life, including Dr. Zhivago, Hamlet, Salome, Telemachus (son of Odysseus), Saint Joan, Tess Trueheart in Dick Tracy and the Grand High Witch in The Witches. She has performed in multiple Big Dance Theater productions, including Alan Smithee Directed This Play, Ich Kurbisgeist (taking over a role originated by Molly Hickok), Shunkin, Another Telepathic Thing, and Girl Gone. For her performance in Big Dance Theater’s Another Telepathic Thing, she received a 2000 OBIE award for performance. Recently, she had a cameo (playing a wedding greeter in a scene opposite leading lady Meryl Streep) in Jonathan Demme’s 2015 film Ricki and the Flash, and played a Greek immigrant at the Bushwick Starr in Christina Masciotti’s play Social Security. She most recently toured with Big Dance Theater’s show 17c.
Cynthia loves reading aloud, and has brought many books to life as a narrator, including Anne-Sophie Brasme’s Breathe, Matthew Dicks’ The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs, and Seanan McGuire’s Every Heart a Doorway (all of which are available on Audible.) She is also available for hire as a voiceover artist.
Cynthia has worked as a musician (playing piano, accordion, guitar, and musical saw) and vocalist for many projects, including numerous tours with Bonnie Prince Billy and years of touring with Dan Zanes. She contributed as both vocalist and musician to multiple Dan Zanes albums, including House Party, Sea Music, Catch That Train, Parades and Panoramas, and The Welcome Table.
Cynthia has been commissioned to compose music and songs for many projects, including a 2005 People’s Commissioning Fund composition for Bang on a Can, music for lyrics in Big Dance Theater productions of Mac Wellman’s Girl Gone and Antigone, and music for lyrics in The Bacchae, Trojan Women, and Salome for NYU’s Experimental Theater Wing. She has composed original songs for many productions, including Pig Iron’s Funeral Marches for America and Big Dance Theater’s Shunkin. For the original songs she wrote for Big Dance Theater’s Another Telepathic Thing, she received a 2001 Bessie award for composition. For the music she wrote for Ridge Theater’s production of Mac Wellman’s at jennie richee, she received a 2001 OBIE award as part of the collaborative team. She composed the song Surrounded by Friendship for Dan Zanes, included in his 2003 album House Party.
