Lyrics

1. UNTIL I DIE

There lies the harbor, the ocean waves
There moves the sea, the vessel puffs her sail
I am become a name, born to bloom again
A bringer of new things is what I am…
It little profits that an idle king by this still hearth
Among these barren crags, matched with an aged wife
I meet and dole unequal laws unto a savage race
That hoard and sleep and feed and know not me
And know not me, and know not me, and know not me
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks
The long day wanes, its margin fades
Come on, come on, come on
Let’s get moving on!
I will not rest from traveling ‘til I am gone…
Push off, and sitting well in order
smite the sounding furrows
for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset
and the baths of all the western stars until I die
until I die, until I die, until I die
until I die, until I die, until I die
until I die; until I die; until I die

2. I KNOW

I know it’s just a little part of you that you show me,
it’s not the whole thing at once
Spirits come and spirits go and they’re always unpredictable
And I know you love me even though you don’t say you do
And it doesn’t bother me anymore,
the way you hold back your love
And come and go with your reactions to the world
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right with me
Spirits come and spirits go
and isn’t it amazing, their timing?
It’s not the same as we are beholden to operate under
in the human realm
That’s why day is day and night is night
and it’s not wrong, it’s not right
It’s beautiful! We don’t know the ending…
we don’t even know the next word

3. ONIONS!

Make believin’ the hours away…
All my life, I’ve been dreamin’
Of a way to escape from reality
I wish I could be a full-time fictional character in a book
A sea captain is reading during breaks from sailing
To an island kingdom in the South Pacific
And he’s lost his way, but it doesn’t matter
He’s beholden to no one, he’s on his own
Just like I could be, free as a bird!
And if I only had the onions to do it, I would
Yes I would yes I would would
Yes I would yes I would would would if I could
Yes I could yes I could could
If I could if I could could could if I would
Yes I would yes I would would
Yes I could yes I could if I had the onions!
If I had the onions! If I had the onions!
If I had the onions! If I had the onions!
Make believin’ I could get paid
Just for dreamin’ of a way
To convert the power
Of my imagination
Into fuel so I could save the human race from global warming
Or if I could get paid for thinking of strange
Ideas for plays that will never get made
Or for making lewd comments that some might find offensive
As a form of entertainment, a professional fool –
Like in a Shakespeare play – I’d be wealthy today!
That’s how crazy I am, I’d be a very rich man
Yes I can yes I can can,
I’m a man an imaginational man
Yes I can yes I can can
I’m an imagination man
Yes I can yes I can can
Yes I can I’m a man and I have the onions!
And I have the onions! And I have the onions!
And I have the onions! I have the onions!

4. UNDERTOW

Reality’s a sunrise in my eyes, I can’t face the day
And I don’t even know why, it has no name
So when you axe me what’s wrong, I can’t explain
It’s very strange when your mind does things you don’t understand
Unclassifiable, and yet so very powerful: it’s like an undertow
It sucks you in, without warning, and will not let you go
Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes again
And I am, and I am without defense: I am possessed
And the spirit inside of me, yearning to break free
Is completely terrified! As if some crisis were impending
Like a ship about to crash between the Scylla and Charibdis
And a Cyclops with a big huge rock! Chaos coming down,
without warning, it’s like an undertow, it will not let you go
Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no
And I know it’s only inside of my mind, but there’s no way
For me not to wanna rise up and fight, and to slay
What kind of weapon can I find?
Something medical professionals can’t provide
Like a shot of cocaine to annihilate my brain
Or I’ll sail to the ends of the Earth
All the way to the South Pacific
Yes I’ll donate my life to service in the Navy
And pray for the waves to save me from the undertow
Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no

5.OH FATHER

Oh father, please listen, you’re breathing, you’re living
And your teaching is also living
It doesn’t matter if you wrote it down:
It will flame out like shining from shook foil
It’s inside everyone who heard your voice, who had your fun
And it’s never really done ‘til the fat lady sings your song
At the top of her lungs: your music goes on and on
It shines like an angel with ah! Bright wings,
It moves across the mountains and upon the restless waves,
It dances with your poetry across the foaming deep,
It rocks me off to sleep
And it will linger on inside us after you have gone

6. INTERLUDE

7. CURSE OF THE WIDOW BLY

A capital ship for an ocean trip was the walloping Widow Bly
No wind that blew dismayed the crew, nor troubled the captain’s mind
The man at the wheel was made to feel contempt for the wildest blow
And it often appeared when the storm had cleared,
he’d been in his cabin below
Oh blow ye winds in the morning, blow ye winds hi ho!
A-sailing I will go, a-sailing I will goooooooo
We ought to have known by the way she run without human aid
That she was possessed by the spiritesse
of the widow what gave her her name
And we ought to have guessed that the spiritesse was with us all the time
For as our ship went along, she sang the song of the walloping Widow Bly
And it went like thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis:
The widow’s life was full of strife from the age of twenty-three
When on a trip on a sailing ship, her husband was lost at sea
And in her grief she refused to believe that he was gone for good
So she resolved to sail the world and find him if she could
Blow ye winds in the morning, blow ye winds hi ho!
A-sailing she would go, a-sailing she did go
But alas, alas, though the spiritesse as a ghost steers like a pro
When she was alive she couldn’t divine the mast from her own elbow
And it wasn’t long before she was flung headlong into a storm
The ship she tipped, the widow flipped and tumbled overboard
Though she tried to fight the tide, the waves were much too strong
And as she drowned, she sang aloud
this haunting little sooooooong:
Though the widow died, her ship survived and safely put to shore
And the ship we’re on is the very same one what threw her overboard
Yes a capital trip for an ocean trip is the walloping Widow Bly
And even in death she will not rest, she’s with us all the time
She steers the boat and keeps her afloat in foul weather or fair
But no matter how low our rations go, she never lands anywhere
So although our ship’s on an endless trip and sailing mighty fine
We’re starvin’ to death and losin’ our breath on account of the Widow Bly
And now we’re dead, we’ve lost our heads, we’ve left this world behind
And we sing as well from the depths of hell the song of the Widow Bly

8. LIKE THIS

I built a house, my father and myself, it was made of wood.
And I remember when an evening’s entertainment
Was to sit around and play piano and to sing while someone danced a jig
Like this, like this, like this
And I was born before television, do you remember?
For it was so long ago now, long before the inter-web,
So for our own entertainment, we had to dance and sing
Like this, like this, like this, like this
A-sailing we will go, yo ho! Yo ho!
A-sailing we will go, yo ho! Yo ho!
Blow ye winds, and crack your cheeks!
A-sailing we will go upon the ocean deep
And now my kingdom’s been split up, I am spent,
And the medical professionals keep blocking my exit.
And yet I can see the trail leading up the mountain to the beautiful view
And looking all around,
I can hear the sound of an evening’s entertainment
Yes, I can hear my song, and I can sing along
Like this, like this, like this
A-sailing we will go, yo ho! Yo ho!
A-sailing we will go, yo ho! Yo ho!
Blow ye winds, and crack your cheeks!
A-sailing we will go upon the ocean deep

9. LOVE

You are the chorus; you are the refrain.
You are the reason we are here today,
you are the games we play, you are love.
You are greater than reality
That our eyes can see, so much more than us!
You are love! Heaven in this lifetime, baby,
It’s right here for you and me to find, right now!
It’s beautiful, and it’s in the palm of your hand:
Love and forgiveness; you are the witness.
You are the sunrise in our eyes,
You are our lives, you are love.
You are the mystery of water,
You are hope for the future,
Oh! You are love! With our backs against the ropes,
Suddenly we find you there: Hope!
Wha-hoo! Without even trying, when we least expect to find you
There you are: in the air!
It’s so easy not to notice you, you are everywhere, invisible,
It’s true. It’s you. It’s love, hiding in what we can’t understand.
That’s love! Heaven in this lifetime, baby,
It’s right here for you and me to find, that’s love.
It’s beautiful, and it’s in the palm of your hand,
Love! That’s love! With our backs against the ropes,
Suddenly we find you there: Hope!
Wha-hoo! Without even trying, when we least expect to find you,
There you are. There you are. There you are. There you are.

10. FOR THOSE IN PERIL ON THE SEA

11. RESIST THE TIDE

Things fall apart, everything tends to decay
And so it takes a lot to combine atoms in such a way
That they resist the lure of that darkness
that lurks around the edges of every day
So I’m inviting you to join me in this fight
to go down to the river and come up all three times
Hank Williams was right, no one gets out alive
all we can do is try to have a really good time
Resist the tide, stand in the water
That’s baptism, that’s making light
Electricity is proof that there can be
A little bit of light in all this darkness
So please don’t go so gently into that good night
Rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light
You know you got a voice, to talk with you can call your own!
So clear your throat, and start singing this song:
Resist the tide, stand in the water
That’s baptism, that’s making light
Electricity is proof that there can be light
It takes a lot of work, but oh baby, it’s worth it.

12. THE ANSWER

I don’t wanna know the answer to the question
What will happen when I die?
I am alive! And it’s such a mystery to be
Dressed up in skin and bones, and always all alone, and yet I know
It’s only an illusion and if I could soften up my heart
I’d feel I’m just a little part of what is all around me
And it’s also inside of me…
And I don’t wanna fight against it anymore, against the world
Or try to force you to become someone other than the one you are
Dressed up in skin and bones, and always all alone, you are
It takes up all my energy and blinds me so that I can’t see
The beauty that is all around me or the miracle of who you are
My darling father…
Nor do I want the chorus dancing in, lamenting: “Why oh why
Must we humans suffer so? Is it that the gods want us to know
That we are not alone?” Dressed up in our skin and our bones,
we can’t control
The motion of the universe or whether we are blessed or cursed
Or if things will get bad or worse or better someday maybe…
No I don’t wanna know the answer to the question what will happen
When I die, I don’t even wanna know why I am alive
Dressed up in skin and bones, and so
Lucky to be living in a time when there is no such thing as
Oracles to tell you what the future may or may not bring
It’s so exciting not to know…
